The Barn Project

Richard & Sarah Penny, the owners of Penny Bricks & Timber are undertaking their own barn conversion in the small village of Hessay, near York.

Their plan is to post images and details of the build including any ideas, the pitfalls and useful information and contacts they have used.

The initial pictures to the right show the barn as they bought it and as the project gets underway, you will be able to revisit this page on a regular basis as more and more information is posted.

We completed on the barn purchase and took these initial two pictures. The top picture is taken from the south east corner showing an early 19th century brick built barn approx 19.6m long x 5.9m wide. In addition there is a small outbuilding on the far side (not in view) bringing the plot size to about 1/3 acre. The attached hexagon sided building is an old wheelhouse used for 'threshing' (the process of seperating the seed or grain from the straw).

The bottom picture shows the inside of the wheelhouse which needs to be restored by replacing the bricks and timbers to create our kitchen/dining area.
